International Profile: China

Strong ties already exist between Victoria and China. In 2004-05, China was Victoria's second largest goods trading partner. In the same period, China as Victoria's third largest export market valued at A$1.8 billion and Victoria's largest source of goods imports, which were valued at more than A$6.3 billion.

A Sister State to Jiangsu Province for the past 25 years, Victoria's industry sectors have strong synergies with China in areas such as biotechnology, automotive, energy, architectural services and agribusiness.

Victoria is a niche player in several key international ICT markets, including the telecommunications, creative content, specialist ICT manufacturing and interactive applications sectors.

Key Chinese ICT companies have established a presence in Victoria including ZTE Corporation, Changhong Electric and TCL.

Victoria enjoys strong educational ties with China. Internationally, Australia is the third main destination for overseas students after the United States and the UK. In 2005, more than 30 percent of all Chinese students studying in Australia were based in Victoria, which makes China the State's fastest growing market for overseas students.

Similarly in tourism, 45 percent of all Chinese visitors to Australia arrive in Melbourne.
