New ICT Jobs Hit 10,000 Mark Under Bracks

Media release - 18 April 2007

New jobs in Victoria's ICT sector have topped 10,000 since the Bracks Government come to office in 1999, with the opening of Konica Minolta's new Centre of Excellence at Southbank today, the Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Tim Holding, said.

Officially opening Konica Minolta's new purpose-built premises, Minister Holding said the injection of more high-tech jobs in Melbourne's Southbank is testament to Victoria's reputation as a global hotspot for ICT.

"Konica Minolta has chosen Victoria as the base for not only its Asia Pacific region, but also to service India, the Middle East and Central and South Africa. Konica Minolta's expansion into Southbank will create up to 20 new jobs," Mr Holding said.

"To have yet another market leader in advanced digital technologies growing in Victoria is good news for the local ICT sector and the economy as a whole."

Mr Holding said Konica Minolta's new Centre of Excellence in Melbourne joined a wave of international projects, investment and people that has been flowing into Victoria in recent years.

"And it is a telling milestone that since October 1999, the Bracks Government has directly facilitated $1.5 billion in capital investment in the ICT sector and secured more than 10,000 new jobs," Mr Holding said.

"The Bracks Government is committed to building a vibrant and successful Victorian economy that is globally competitive and internationally focused.

"The expansion of a highly respected international brand like Konica Minolta in Victoria will only inspire greater industry confidence and encourage others to follow suit.

Konica spokesperson Ms Robynn Pym, State Branch Manager, Victoria, said Konica Minolta's new high-tech offices reflect the high-tech innovative direction the company is taking through production print development and business solutions.

"Konica Minolta has built on our 40 year history in Australia since merging in 2003, and we’re very proud to further cement our place in Victoria’s thriving ICT sector," Ms Pym said.
