64 jobs for a new Victorian broadband institute

A new institute for broadband will be created at the University of Melbourne creating 64 highly skilled Victorian jobs with funding from the Victorian Government.

Premier John Brumby said the Institute for a Broadband Enabled Society (IBES) would be Australia’s first institute dedicated to future broadband applications.

“This new $50 million institute will bring together some of the best broadband-related researchers from Australia and around the world,” Mr Brumby said.

“The institute will create 64 new Victorian jobs and help to position our state to capitalise on the recovery from the Global Financial Crisis.

“This institute is another reason why Victoria is the natural home of the NBN Corporation along with Victoria’s impressive reputation in broadband-related research and development.”

Minister for Information and Communication Technology John Lenders said the institute would bring together key industry players to develop and test innovative broadband technologies and applications for the future.

“Academic and private sector experts will be able to work together like never before to develop new products to export to the world,” Mr Lenders said.

“Companies like Telstra, Cisco, Allied Telesis, Microsoft, Ericsson, NEC Australia, Optus, Pacific Broadband Networks, Haliplex, Alcatel-Lucent and Bell Laboratories have already agreed to participate in this new institute.”

Mr Lenders said the University of Melbourne, NICTA and Centre for Ultra Broadband Information Networks (CUBIN) are foundation partners of this institute and will work closely with the private sector partners to develop products and applications for the NBN.

“IBES reinforces Victoria’s leadership in supporting and developing innovative and job creating technology,” Mr Lenders said.
