Australian Computer Society (ACS) Foundation on its ICT scholarship program

Victorian Government Backs ICT Scholarships

Media release - 7 June 2005

Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Marsha Thomson has congratulated the Australian Computer Society (ACS) Foundation on its ICT scholarship program.

Speaking at the presentation of scholarships in Melbourne today, the Minister said the ACS Foundation's scholarships were an important part of Victoria's development as a global ICT centre.

"The Bracks Government firmly believes in nurturing the greatest assets the Victorian ICT industry has - and that's our people, their talent and the educational institutions that train them," the Minister said.

"Quite simply, Victoria's position as a global ICT centre hinges on having the right people with the right skills."

"Victoria stands head and shoulders above the rest of Australia in our ability to nurture world-class IT people.

"This state is home to 23,000 students enrolled in ICT university courses and we produce the highest number of IT, computing and engineering graduates per year in Australia."

The ACS Foundation was established in August 2001 to encourage both private and public sponsorship of IT higher education and research projects.

This year the foundation awarded 35 new scholarships to Victorian students.

Since its inception, the foundation has awarded 97 Victorian scholarships worth more than $1.75 million.

The Minister also congratulated the companies, industry peak bodies, educational institutions and other organisations that supported the scholarships.

"Without this support, these scholarships, which are so important to the future of Victoria's ICT industry, would not have happened.

"These scholarships are a great example of what can be achieved when industry, educational institutions and government work together for the future of the Victorian ICT industry," the Minister said.

How can we help?
