New web resource for broadband in Victoria

Media release - 1 September 2005

A new on-line resource will help Victorians learn more about access to broadband technology in their homes, businesses and communities, the Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Marsha Thomson, said today.

Ms Thomson said the Broadband Access Office was the latest initiative from the Bracks Government to help grow Victoria as the best-connected state in Australia and one of the most effective users of broadband in the world.

"The Broadband Access Office is Victoria's one-stop on-line shop for information on broadband," Ms Thomson said.

"Broadband technology is one of the most exciting and important developments of recent times, giving us more choices in the way we live, work and do business.

"The Bracks Government has created the Broadband Access Office to ensure Victorians are well informed about broadband and the options available on the market.

"The Broadband Access Office is a vital information resource for communities, local councils and others wanting to get broadband services into their area. It is the A-Z of information on broadband issues - a comprehensive independent resource helping you choose the right broadband service for your needs.

"The site allows you to check broadband availability and demand region by region, and gives guidance on what to do if you can't get broadband yet. It also provides information on how developers can help get broadband in new buildings.

"For businesses it gives information on helping you choose the right broadband service to suit your needs as well as a series of case studies that illustrate how communities can go about getting broadband in their area.

"Broadband offers enormous opportunities for all Victorians. The Broadband Access Office is another Bracks Government commitment to A Fairer Victoria, aimed at ensuring all Victorians reap the benefits of broadband in their businesses, community groups and homes."

Head of the Australian Telecommunications Users Group (ATUG), Rosemary Sinclair, welcomed the Broadband Access Office.

"It's very encouraging to see the Victorian Government being proactive on telecommunications issues," Ms Sinclair said.

"The importance of providing up-to-date, relevant and user-friendly information into the market, especially at the local level for investors, businesses and consumers cannot be underestimated.

"We all know telecommunications can be complex. Independent web resources like the Broadband Access Office are of vital public importance, and strongly supported by ATUG."

The Broadband Access Office is an easily navigated website and contains a wealth of information, ranging from an explanation of broadband technologies to details of a whole range of broadband initiatives in metropolitan and regional Victoria.
