Global Telco Chooses Melbourne for HQ

Media release - 19 October 2006

Global telecommunications company, Tellabs, has chosen Melbourne for its Australian headquarters in a resounding vote of confidence in the local ICT industry, Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Marsha Thomson said today.

Tellabs, global provider of broadband solutions enabling high-quality voice, video and data services, will continue to increase the personnel within the Australian HQ over the next year.

"This investment translates to high-end jobs for local Victorian ICT companies, particularly as Tellabs has secured a contract with Telstra to provide next generation network infrastructure," Ms Thomson said.

"The work Tellabs will undertake at the multimillion dollar Telstra Integration Laboratory, which opened in Melbourne in August, will have a direct impact on the future of telecommunications in this country.

"The Bracks Government is working to secure these sorts of strategic investment for Victoria under its
ICT Industry Plan 2005-2010.

"Victoria is a fantastic location for global ICT companies to invest. The State boasts strong innovation, high end ICT skills and the largest number of new ICT graduates in Australia.

"The Tellabs Australian HQ is a welcome addition to the impressive list of ICT companies investing in Victoria - globally employing 3,700 staff, with a total revenue of over $2.5 billion in 2005."

Tellabs solutions have been sold throughout Australia for the past 12 years. Tellabs global headquarters are in Naperville, Illinois with offices across the globe.
