HP Builds on Victoria's ICT Strengths

Media release - 5 December 2006

The Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Tim Holding, today joined global technology giant Hewlett-Packard to mark the beginning of construction of a new multi-million dollar facility in Melbourne’s Forest Hill.

The company’s new office will be purpose-built to house its 1000-plus Victorian workforce, whose skills range across the full spectrum of ICT capabilities. The building will be owned and operated by HP and constructed according to best practice in environmental efficiency.

“HP’s decision to build a new $40 million office in Victoria is testament to our reputation as Australia’s leading state in ICT,” Mr Holding said.

“This investment is also a clear demonstration of the company’s long-term commitment to Victoria, and we are proud to count as part of our local industry an ICT company of this calibre.”

Mr Holding said the Victorian ICT sector continued to go from strength to strength – combining the mix of skills, infrastructure and local innovation needed to attract iconic international companies such as HP.

“Victoria has forged a reputation as the hub of ICT in Australia and the Bracks Government is committed to maintaining a priority focus on information and communication technology,” Mr Holding said.

“Since coming to office in 1999, the Bracks Government has facilitated the creation of almost 10,000 jobs in ICT and attracted $1.2 billion in capital investment.

“Approximately 30 per cent of Australia’s ICT workforce is employed in Victoria.”

With annual revenue of more than US$90 billion, HP is the world’s largest technology solutions provider.

The company’s work spans IT infrastructure, personal computing and access devices, global services and imaging and printing for consumers, enterprises and small and medium businesses.

“This is an exciting moment in the history of HP in Victoria, and reinforces our commitment to the Victorian economy. HP employees are looking forward to working in this new, all purpose and environmentally friendly office,” said Paul Brandling, Vice President & Managing Director, HP South Pacific.
