The Melton Environmental Atlas has won this year’s Victorian Spatial Excellence Awards, highlighting how high-tech mapping can manage natural resources, Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Theo Theophanous announced.
The Atlas collates and analyses data to steer Melton council's environment, natural resources and agricultural planning strategies, including the Growth Plan for Melton.
“I’d like to congratulate the team behind this fantastic project, which is making an immense contribution to sustainability in regional planning and rural development,” Mr Theophanous said.
“This project sets new best practice in behind-the-scenes spatial information management.
“This is just one of the local success stories to be recognised at this annual awards night, which brings to the fore some of the world-class spatial information technologies being developed here in Victoria.
“The awards this year showcase the vital impact that innovation and new spatial technologies are having on the way we deal with some of today’s major issues.
“From flood and fire management, to major construction work, farming and water spatial technologies are playing an integral role in delivering solutions to government, business and the community.
“Victoria’s spatial information industry is among the world’s best. It already turns over $410 million annually, and comprises more than 220 local businesses.”
In June this year, the Victorian Government provided $100,000 to formally set up the new Spatial Victoria cluster under the $1 million ICT Linkages Program.
“Formalising Spatial Victoria as a cluster was a huge step in supporting the growth and competitiveness of the local spatial industry. Encouraging collaboration amongst the cluster members was truly evident at the awards and provides credibility on a national and international stage for the Victorian companies,” Mr Theophanous said.
