Internet Access Boost for Frankston Unemployed

Bracks Government Boosts Internet Access for Disadvantaged in Stonnington

Media release - 2 June 2006

People with mental illness are finding new ways to engage with their community through the internet.

The Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Marsha Thomson, and the Member for Prahran, Tony Lupton, today launched an extension to the Prahran Mission Public Internet Access.

Ms Thomson said the Prahran Mission would receive $7,500 to continue providing public internet access, as part of a $3.5 million funding boost from the Bracks Government.

"Prahran Mission supports people working through social disadvantage, so that they can make the most of all the benefits the internet has to offer," Ms Thomson said.

"The grant helps pay for internet connections and purchase new computers."

The Prahran Mission is one of the 88 community organisations across the state to have gained funding through the Public Internet Access Program.

Established in 2005, the program helps community groups provide free or affordable internet access to a diverse range of people currently underrepresented among internet users.

Mr Lupton said the internet access provided through the Prahran Mission Public Internet Access program was a vital service for people experiencing a mental illness.

"Many of the people who use this program may not have the confidence, skills or financial resources to be able to access the internet at the local library or neighbourhood house," Mr Lupton said.

"The Mission is able to provide a safe and supportive environment for people to access the internet at their own pace.

"The program removes the barriers to getting online giving people the opportunity to seek employment, broaden their social connections and enjoy all the benefits of surfing the net.

"The Bracks Government is also honouring its commitment to create A Fairer Victoria. We are working with local governments, communities and businesses to help remove barriers to opportunity, and provide access and choice for all Victorians," Mr Lupton said.
