Ireland Sets Up A Hi-Tech Home In Victoria

Media release - 13 September 2007

Irish software solutions company FINEOS has chosen Melbourne as its new Asia Pacific headquarters, Minister for Information and Communication Technology Theo Theophanous announced today.

“This new headquarters and Centre of Excellence in Melbourne will see FINEOS grow from 30 to more than 100 staff in Melbourne over the next three years and these are the sorts of high-end ICT jobs the Brumby Government works hard to attract to our state,” Mr Theophanous said.

“Victoria has a strong ICT environment and diverse companies from across the world are increasingly making Victoria their base for doing business in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Victoria has an excellent track record in attracting investment from high calibre international companies – including household names such as Ericsson, Bosch and HP who have all set up local headquarters here.

“While we’ve made a big impact on traditional ICT hotspots with, for instance, nine of India’s top 20 ICT companies choosing to locate new offices in Victoria, we are also looking beyond the obvious to strategically support high-quality enterprises from all corners of the globe to bring their business to our state.

“It is fitting with Melbourne’s multicultural landscape that our traditional bonds with Ireland are finding new ways to manifest – with the Irish having already made a huge contribution to Australian history.

“Like many of Irish ancestry making their way here before them, including Brownlow Medallist and Reach Co-Founder Jim Stynes, I’m sure FINEOS will also make a great contribution to Victoria over coming years.

“This latest investment from an international ICT specialist comes on the back of more than $1.5 billion in capital investment and over 10,000 ICT jobs directly facilitated by the Victorian Government since 1999.

“Generating new jobs and new ICT investment for the state forms part of the Victorian Government’s
ICT Industry Plan 2005-2010, designed to foster continued development of high-quality ICT capability across the state’s economy.”

The decision from Dublin-based FINEOS to make Melbourne their Asia-Pacific headquarters resulted from talks between FINEOS CEO Michael Kelly and former Premier Steve Bracks during his Ireland visit in May this year.

FINEOS Business Development Director Australasia, Mike Brosche, said support from the Victorian Government helped to make the decision to locate the headquarters in Victoria easy.

“Not only do we have some of our major clients in Melbourne, but we have access to a skilled workforce and the city’s lifestyle makes it a great place to live and work,” Mr Brosche said.
