Minister Leads Australia's Largest ICT Mission To Japan |
| Media release - 19 June 2005 |
| The Victorian Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Marsha Thomson, will lead the largest ever trade mission of Victorian ICT companies to Japan to promote the state as an internationally competitive source for innovative products and services. The delegation - comprising of 32 organisations and around 50 individuals from the eLearning, Games, RFID, Software and Intelligent Transport Systems fields - will visit Tokyo, Kyoto and Nagoya for a series of high-level meetings with key Japanese companies. They will also attend the Aichi World Expo 2005. Ms Thomson said the companies would meet with the Premier, Steve Bracks, when he launched Victoria Week at the Aichi World Expo next week. "This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the strengths of Victorian ICT companies and promote Victoria as an investment location, with an internationally competitive source for innovative products and services," Ms Thomson said. "The trade mission is another tangible way that the Bracks Government is providing opportunities to grow the ICT industry in Victoria through building business relationships with our Japanese counterparts." Ms Thomson said her official visit would also include hosting key functions for the Victorian industry to build relationships with business people in the Japanese ICT industry. She said delegates would also participate in a specially tailored program of business development activities throughout the trip. "Adding useful local knowledge, leading Japanese companies Toyota, NEC and Fujitsu, are also joining the mission, along with National ICT Australia Limited (NICTA) and the Game Developers' Association of Australia," Ms Thomson said. "There is already a significant business relationship between Japan and Victoria, with Victoria being home to more than 140 Japanese companies. "But the connection is strong in other areas too - this year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the signing of the sister-state relationship between Victoria and the Aichi Prefecture in Japan. "I am eager to take this opportunity to build on our existing relationship and help grow our local ICT industry internationally." Companies involved in the mission are participating through Multimedia Victoria's Trade Fairs and Mission program, which provides financial assistance to Victorian ICT companies with less than 200 employees to attend recognised overseas trade fairs and missions. The program was established by the Bracks Government to encourage Victorian companies to take their products to the world. The Aichi World Expo - 'Exposition of Global Harmony' - will take place from March to September with 120 countries and eight international organisations participating. The Expo is expected to attract 15 million visitors. The ICT trade mission to Japan comprises the following Victorian companies and organisations: |
