| Australia's largest software developer, Mincom, is to double its Melbourne operations to 80 staff, the Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Marsha Thomson, announced today. The Brisbane-based company, which has offices in 13 countries, will increase its Melbourne-based support staff to serve its growing client base and better support its Victorian customers. "The Bracks Government has worked hard to develop the right policy settings for the Victorian ICT industry. Mincom's expanded presence in Melbourne is testament to our ICT business environment and local ICT capabilities," Ms Thomson said. "We have worked tirelessly with the university and TAFE sector, as well as industry, to ensure the next generation of ICT graduates are job-ready and most importantly have the skills set required by business. "These policies are clearly paying dividends – since 1 Jan 2006, we have facilitated the creation of more than 1000 ICT jobs, bring the total since the election of the second Bracks Government to more than 5500 to date." Mincom specialises in providing software and services solutions for asset-intensive organisations in mining, utilities, transportation, defence and government. The extra staff are expected to be in place by the end of March 2007. "Mincom had a tremendous 2006 financial year and we'll continue to expand our presence locally and globally. The buoyancy of the Victorian ICT sector is something that Mincom is keen to be part of," Said Mincom CEO Richard Matthews. Ms Thomson said the Government realised that a vibrant ICT sector can only exist if there are skills to underpin its growth and expansion. "To this end, the Bracks Government has funded 33 university scholarships to date for undergraduates to gain on-the-job experience as part of the Industry Plan's $1.9 million ICT scholarships package," she said. This follows on from the ICT careers awareness campaign, 'ICT: Start Here Go Anywhere', which has seen the Government lead the charge along with the AIIA and the Australian Industry Group in response to widespread concerns about falling ICT enrolments. |
