NEC Australia – Making a Difference In Mulgrave |

| Mulgrave is leading the nation with cutting-edge information technology, network and business solutions, largely thanks to the work of locally-based global icon NEC Australia, the Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Theo Theophanous, said during a site visit today. Mr Theophanous, who is also the State Minister for Industry and Trade, said NEC Australia’s head office in Mulgrave was helping drive the state economy by providing local jobs and generating nearly $1.5 billion in exports over the past 12 years. “The Brumby Government continues to support NEC’s ongoing initiatives, in particular the advanced research and development being carried out by their facility in Mulgrave,” Mr Theophanous said. “The NEC Next Generation Broadband Research and Development facility is the only one of its kind outside of Japan that is conducting 3G mobile and Digital Subscriber Loop research and development. “The NEC R&D facility is excellent for Victoria in terms of jobs and contribution to the economy with more than 400 research and development engineers and technical staff currently employed by the facility, making it Victoria’s largest commercial ICT research and development centre. “This centre has made a huge contribution to putting Victoria at the fore of ICT development, as well as boosting employment opportunities in and around Mulgrave, with NEC on track to deliver 63 new jobs by 2008. “The Victorian ICT industry currently represents approximately 34 per cent of the national ICT employment, generating approximately $5.75 billion in annual revenue.” Mulgrave MP Daniel Andrews said that the Victorian Government’s ICT Industry Plan 2005-2010 recognises the critical importance of innovation to economic performance. “By investing in innovation, the Brumby Government is maintaining its position as the premier Australian state for research and development, and NEC in Mulgrave is a significant part of this,” Mr Andrews said.
