National ICT Careers Week Kicks off in Victoria |
| Media release - 28 July 2008 |
| Young Victorians are being encouraged to consider a career in the information and communication technology industry as part of activities across Victoria for National ICT Careers Week, held between 28 July and 2 August. Information and Communication Technology Minister Theo Theophanous said the thriving Victorian ICT industry offered great career options for young people. "Organisations around the nation, including governments, industry and the education sector, are providing a range of activities to promote ICT pathways for young people during National ICT Careers Week," Mr Theophanous said. "Victoria continues to lead Australia in technology, with more than a third of the nation's ICT employment based in this state. "This is also another opportunity to showcase the talents, contributions and achievements of Victoria's ICT sector, while providing young people with the opportunity to find out more about successful and rewarding careers in the industry." Mr Theophanous said the main event of Victoria's celebrations was the ICT and Careers Expo at Melbourne High School, coordinated by the Victorian IT Teachers Association and sponsored by the Brumby Government. "Free to the public, the ICT and Careers Expo is open to all students and their parents and will showcase different ICT careers," he said. The event is closely aligned to the Brumby Government's collaborative campaign ICT: Start Here. Go Anywhere. that promotes ICT skills and career paths for young people. "The number of technology jobs is growing each year and we want today's students to gain genuine insight on just how far study and a career in ICT can take them," Mr Theophanous said. "From games developers to engineers and tech specialists, skills in ICT are a passport to many interesting and exciting professional careers. Few other skills offer career opportunities in such a diverse range of industries." Mr Theophanous said the Brumby Government was committed to supporting ICT in Victoria by assisting our local companies and providing opportunities in thriving international markets. "Initiatives like our highly successful ICT Trade Events and Export Assistance Program provide financial assistance for local companies to attend prestigious trade fairs worldwide – with more than 245 grants provided to Victorian companies over the last year," he said. "Through National ICT Careers Week we are hoping that students across Victoria will see the vast range of options available to them in an ICT career." |
