New $200 Million Green Data Centre for Victoria

Media release - 4 December 2008

Australian company Tretecnic will deliver a pioneering environmentally sustainable data centre in Victoria, creating 50 new jobs and expected to generate investment worth $200 million.

Acting Information and Communication Technology Minister Gavin Jennings said the company choosing Victoria for the data centre reflected the Brumby Government's commitment to further developing the industry.

"The Brumby Government is taking action to develop the Victorian ICT industry so we remain at the forefront of new technology," Mr Jennings said.

"Tretecnic has chosen to establish this facility in Victoria because we are working hard to create the conditions and the environment to enable such critical ICT infrastructure to be built here.

"Since 1999, we have invested more than $3 billion in innovation and have earned our reputation as Australia's centre for ICT.

"This new data initiative will provide a purpose-built data centre facility to assist the public and private sectors to effectively manage their data while helping to reduce their carbon footprint."

Mr Jennings said the facility would be particularly energy efficient through the use of new technology and systems that could also be easily expanded well into the future.

Tretecnic's Managing Director Rob Kelly said the company was extremely impressed with the supportive environment and existing infrastructure in Victoria.

"Victoria has a proven track record in information technology and innovation, with a focus on building for the future," Mr Kelly said.

"This aligns with our vision for continuous improvement and even better long-term environmental outcomes."

Mr Jennings said that in addition to being environmentally sustainable, the data centre's design would allow for future green technology and sustainability features to be incorporated.

"Not only will the centre be in line with the United States EPA Gold Star Standards, but Tretecnic were the first Australian members of the Green Grid, a global consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centres and business computing ecosystems," he said.

"Victoria is a world leader in creating and fostering a culture of innovation and environmental sustainability. Combined with our leadership position in ICT, we will continue to build upon our strengths to deliver more jobs and economic benefits for Victorians."

Victoria's ICT industry generates $24.4 billion in annual revenue, exports over $1.8 billion and employs more than 84,000 people, accounting for about 34 per cent of national ICT employment.
