Playing a health e-game

News - 14 May 2009

Health eGames - made famous by the immensely popular Nintendo Wii - was the top topic of conversation at the inaugural eGames for Health meeting last week.

Held as part of the Health Beyond Conference, the event aimed to establish an effective link between the Australian game industry and the health industry.

The intent was to enable the healthcare industry to better understand the opportunities provided by games technology, and for games developers and publishers to understand the opportunities that exist within the health sector.

Health e-games is a rapidly growing segment of the computer games industry that is developing considerable strength in mainstream health.

Health e-games defines game products that fulfil the dual requirement of being both entertaining and beneficial to an individuals health and wellbeing.

The market is estimated to be worth $6.6 billion worldwide.

The event attracted industry leaders from the AIMIA, GDAA and IEAA organisations as well as key industry representatives including game industry developers/publishers, physicians, nurses, health managers, systems vendors and IT service providers.

eGames for Health was organised by the Health Informatics Society of Australia (HISA) in conjunction with the Victorian Government.
