SISSIT brings SMS boarding to Jetstar

News - Wednesday, 5 August 2009

Technology created by Victoria's SISSIT Group will soon allow Jetstar airline passengers to receive their boarding passes via SMS.

The company’s world-first technology will be used to introduce boarding passes through mobile phone text message (SMS) and 24 hour pre-enrolment check-in by the end of 2009, creating greater efficiencies and saving time for the airline’s passengers

SISSIT’s technology enables a unique boarding code to be sent to any mobile phone regardless of whether it has Wireless Application Protocol or internet connectivity and this is then scanned in lieu of the traditional paper boarding pass.

Jetstar will combine the SMS code with an automatic check-in option that allows customers who buy a ticket on its website to request that the airline check them in 24 hours prior to departure. The system automatically sends them the SMS code, which they display on their mobile phone screen and present for scanning when they board the plane.

Trials of the SMS Boarding system will start on 8 September 2009 at Melbourne’s Avalon Airport, with an expected Australian domestic network wide roll out from November following evaluation of the trials.

SISSIT Group and Jetstar have a research and development partnership.
