Six Victorians win 2009 Fulbright Scholarships

Six Victorians were awarded prestigious Fulbright Scholarships at a presentation dinner in Hobart last night. The scholarship program enables recipients to undertake vital research and to build links with leading US institutions.
Congratulations to all the 2009 Fulbright Victorian Scholarship winners:

- Byron Wicks (University of Melbourne), NICTA PhD student and Research Engineer, received a Fulbright Victoria Scholarship which will be used to undertake further studies at the University of California in Berkeley. Bryon was a student of Professor Stand Skafidas, having designed a key component of the Gigabit Wireless chip.

- Dr Tina Bell (University of Melbourne), Senior Research Fellow, won a Fulbright Professional Business/Industry (Coral Sea) Scholarship. She will undertake three months research at the Centre for Fire Research and Outreach (CFRO) at the College of Natural Resources in the University of California, Berkeley.
- Kim Mosse (Monash University), PhD candidate, was awarded a Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship, and will carry out research into the effects of irrigation with winery waste water on soil and plant health at the University of California in Davis.
- Florian (Floyd) Mueller (University of Melbourne) received a Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship in Technology and Communication which was sponsored by Telstra. He will work at Stanford University researching the use of interaction design to create innovative interactive systems to facilitate physical and social health amongst computer players and addressing a growing obesity issue.
- Dr Colin Scholes (University of Melbourne), Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies Research Fellow, received a Fulbright Victoria Scholarship. He will spend four months at the Department of Chemical Engineering at University of Texas in Austin, working on cheaper ways to mitigate carbon emissions from coal fired power plants.
- Matthew Tilleard (University of Melbourne), Development Consultant, won a Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship to undertake research at Harvard University. His research aims to find ways to improve economic development for poor communities and nations.
