| BANGALORE, India: Victorian Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Marsha Thomson, today launched the first Victorian Government Business Office (VGBO) in India. "The opportunities for Victorian businesses in India are immense and the growth of the subcontinent's booming economy will soon make India one of the largest economies in the world," Ms Thomson said. "To take full advantage of the opportunities in India it is vital we strengthen our business networks on the ground, and that is why I am delighted to be launching this office (VGBO) here in Bangalore on behalf of Premier Bracks." Ms Thomson said the Bracks Government had developed close ties with India over recent years and was increasingly aware of the huge trade and investment opportunities for Victoria and Victorian companies. "Two-way trade between Victoria and India has grown to reach over AUD$600 million in 2003-04,"Ms Thomson said. "India has become a powerhouse of economic activity in recent years, with outward investment increasing ten fold between 1999 and 2003 to US$9.13 billion and Victoria is competing effectively for that investment. "Recent Indian investments in Victoria include Tata, Infosys and Satyam, which recently announced Melbourne as the 300 seat state-of-the-art centre global software development centre for the company's Asia-Pacific projects." Premier Steve Bracks announced the Victorian Government would establish an office in Bangalore after signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the State of Karnataka during his visit to India in April. "The MoU has helped to establish stronger links between the two States in the areas of education, tourism, ICT, manufacturing and biotechnology," Ms Thomson said. "There are many synergies between Victoria and India in the ICT, biotechnology, film and agri-business sectors, and in the lead up to India's Commonwealth Games in 2010, the links are going to become even more meaningful." Business Club Australia: Melbourne 2006, the business network and matching service for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, already has nearly 1000 Indian companies as members. "The new VGBO in Bangalore will be the focal point for business links between Victoria and India and will be headed by Mr Wayne Lewis." said Ms Thomson. |
