Media release - 28 October 2005

The Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Marsha Thomson, today welcomed the deal between Melbourne-based software company, Business Intelligence Technologies (BIT) and Indian-listed global ICT company, MphasiS.

Speaking from Bangalore at the opening of BIT's second Business Intelligence Institute, Ms Thomson the possibilities for collaboration between the Victorian and Indian ICT industries were endless.

"The Bracks Government recognises India as a market with growing opportunities for the local ICT industry that present excellent prospects for collaborative ventures, such as this," Ms Thomson said.

"In partnership with MphasiS, BIT will assist clients in innovating and streamlining their business processes by offering custom solutions for technology and operations outsourcing.

"I congratulate BIT on launching its second Business Intelligence Institute in India, following the success of their Chennai institute, which I opened last year.

"The opening of the Business Intelligence Institute and today's agreement between BIT and MphasiS is an excellent example where Victorian innovation and niche business combined with the reach of Indian companies can benefit both countries.

"The opening of the Business Intelligence Institute in Bangalore will also enable collaboration between Victoria and India on high-quality industry based education and research."

The centre will be an advanced institute for Business Intelligence offering seminars, online and classroom courses for power users in the banking, telecommunications and healthcare sectors.

The institute will also deliver courses to students pursuing higher degrees in association with leading Victorian universities.

Ms Thomson said trade between Victoria and India had been growing steadily to reach more than AUD$600 million in 2003-04.

Ms Thomson is currently leading a delegation of 25 Victorian companies to BangaloreIT.in 2005 - Asia's largest ICT trade fair.

The delegation includes people from the eLearning, software development, RFID, manufacturing and legal sectors of ICT, as well as representatives from RFID Association of Australia and Victoria University.
