| The Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Marsha Thomson, today welcomed a $20 million commitment by Optus to invest in broadband infrastructure in regional Victoria. Speaking at the launch of the Optus Plan for Regional Victoria, Ms Thomson said the Optus commitment would be a great benefit to businesses and the community. "The Bracks Government recognises that access to competitive broadband infrastructure is vital to regional Victoria's business growth," Ms Thomson said. "The Government aggregated its own telecommunications demand to not only get the best deal for Government but to also benefit the community. "Our smart purchasing of telecommunications is delivering a more than $100 million telecommunication infrastructure investment across Victoria. "Optus, as the supplier of all of Government's fixed voice services and some mobile services, made a commitment of $20 million to provide business grade DSL services in 41 towns across Victoria. "This is a substantial commitment by Optus and one that will provide competition, and in some cases, a new level of service to benefit those towns." Ms Thomson said the strategic relationship between Optus and the Bracks Government had also led to a further $40 million investment in broadband infrastructure in metropolitan Victoria. "Optus is showing a great commitment to expanding in Victoria and with the release of its plan today, a great commitment to expand across regional Victoria," Ms Thomson said. |
