Bracks Government doubles export & investment prospects for Victoria's ICT companies

Media release - 18 August 2005

The Bracks Government has doubled the level of funding and support for Victoria's ICT industry by rejuvenating its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Trade Events and Export Assistance Program, the Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Marsha Thomson, announced today.

"Victoria continues to lead the nation in the push into the global ICT market," Minister Thomson said.

"The Bracks Government is committed to building on the success of recent world trade fairs and missions with an invigorated
ICT Trade Events and Export Assistance Program which doubles funding and support for international networking, exhibiting and exporting opportunities for the local ICT industry.

"Kicking off on October 1, the program will build a strong Victorian presence in the global ICT market by creating opportunities for export-ready local companies to participate at international events.

"There are new categories available for companies who are first-time sole exhibitors or group exhibitors who are eligible for a grant of up to $10,000. Sole exhibitors can apply for a grant of up to $8,000, while a shared stand exhibitor may be eligible for a grant of up to $4,000. Grants for networkers have increased to $2,500.

"Showcasing the innovation of our Victorian companies to international markets and giving them the chance to network with key players in the global ICT scene, more often than not, leads to lucrative export and investment deals for the Victorian industry, as we have seen with recent missions to India and Japan.

"The ability of a company to export is critical to its future growth and success, however, learning to export is difficult. The Bracks Government is committed to providing the local ICT industry with access to advice and expertise that can reduce some of the barriers when entering the global marketplace.

"This Government is listening to what the industry is telling us and working collaboratively towards building a relevant and globally-competitive ICT industry to take Victoria into the future.

"One of the challenges is identifying where the next ICT hotspot will be and getting in there first - we recognise that and have been quick off the mark in that respect. Look no further than the successes flowing from the India ICT trade mission last year.

"We've seen $6.5 million worth of deals made directly from that mission and a strengthening of Victoria's reputation as the place to be for ICT."

Since its inception, the Government's trade fairs and missions program has helped 800 ICT companies to attend international trade events such as CeBIT in Hannover, Germany, BangaloreIT.com in India and World Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan.

Export-ready Victorian companies are encouraged to apply for the new grants for any trade fairs or missions after October 1. Further details on the program and application forms can be found at
