| Victorian ICT companies celebrated success picking up a total of eight awards at the 2009 Governor of Victoria Export Awards held in Melbourne on Wednesday 21 October. Future Fibre Technologies Pty Ltd scooped up two awards, winning the Small to Medium Manufacturer Award and commendee for Victorian Export Award for Innovation and Excellence. Future Fibre exports to over 170 sites around the world, providing fibre optic intrusion detection and location systems. The technology is unique in that no power or electronics are used, therefore is intrinsically safe and immune to electro-magnetic or radio frequency interference, as well as lightning and storm effects. Three of the highest accolades of the evening went to ICT companies, reinforcing Victoria’s commitment as an Australian leader in ICT, and further highlighting the importance of export as a key means of achieving high long-term economic growth. Richmond based games developer Firemint scooped up the Arts and Entertainment Award. Earlier this year, Firemint developed its first self-published game, Flight Control, for iPhone and iTouch. One of the fastest-ever selling iPhone games, Flight Control gained immediate success shooting to the top of the iPhone ‘Top Paid Aps’ chart in 20 countries, with over one million downloads worldwide. Firemint’s latest award-winning game for iPhone, Real Racing, has been critically acclaimed around the world. Tantalus Media won the Information and Communication Technology Award demonstrating the talent and capabilities of independent videogames developers in the export industry. Over 15 years in business, Tantalus Media has a portfolio of over 30 videogames sold worldwide on various consoles. Akcelik & Associates Pty Ltd, recipients of the Small Business Award were recognised as being innovative and forward-thinking, creating powerful traffic engineering software used by transport professional worldwide. Akcelik & Associates pride themselves on working for community benefit by contributing to safe, environmentally friendly and efficient traffic operations. Other Victorian ICT companies to take home awards included: Torus Games commendee of the Arts and Entertainment Award, The Adweb Agency commendee of Information and Communication Technology Award, and SMS Global Pty Ltd commendee of the Small Business Award. Winners of the Victorian Export Awards automatically progress as finalists to the Australian Export Awards to be held on Friday 20 November at the Great Hall, Parliament House, Canberra. The Australian Export Awards recognise and honour exporters who have achieved sustainable export growth through innovation and commitment. |
