Two of Victoria's top universities are exploring new potential uses of technology such as hi-tech sensors and interactive entertainment at technology industry conferences this week, Victorian Minister for Information and Communication Technology Theo Theophanous has announced.
Mr Theophanous said the Brumby Government was proud to support local innovation through sponsorship of the University of Melbourne's International Conference on Intelligent Sensors, Sensor Networks and Information Processing (ISSNIP) and the Interactive Entertainment Conference, hosted by RMIT.
"Victoria has become skilled at producing high-end boutique technology solutions through innovative companies big and small that specialise in finding and catering to specific niche markets," Mr Theophanous said.
"These conferences embrace and nurture that innovative culture by bringing bright minds together to discuss the potential of cutting edge technology.
"The Brumby Government's sponsorship helps foster breakthrough ICT initiatives and is an important investment into further developing our growing local ICT industry.
"By providing the opportunity for ICT professionals and researchers to work together, we are creating a strong, progressive ICT environment in Victoria."
During the ISSNIP conference 3-6 December, the University of Melbourne's research network has looked at applications of intelligent sensors, smart systems and multi-sensor issues to develop defence, healthcare and environmental ICT solutions.
RMIT's Schools of Creative Media and Computer Science's Interactive Entertainment conference from 3-5 December has looked at new interactive entertainment models and explored the challenges of social software and networks such as YouTube and MySpace.
The sponsorship program is underpinned by the Victorian Government ICT Industry Plan 2005–2010 in its investment in innovation and encouragement for strategic collaboration. |
