Victoria's research community's leadership in global collaborative research has been strengthened with the launch of the Optiportal node, Premier Brumby announced today.

The Optiportal node gives Victorian ICT researchers access to ultra broadband connectivity via a 1 Gigabit AARNet link across the Pacific.

"Research is increasingly being carried out in an electronic environment and it is crucial that Victoria's research community is equipped to reap the full benefit of new technologies – after all, their important work has real and positive outcomes for Victoria," Mr Brumby said.

"The Optiportal is a vital link which allows real-time collaboration between researchers across vast locations and disciplines; to push the bounds of research through the power of ultra broadband connectivity.

"New ICT applications and ideas can be demonstrated and a platform for exploring how research collaborations can be enhanced through the power of ultra broadband connectivity.

"Ultra broadband networks give researchers access to highly complex instruments, databases, libraries, supercomputers and colleagues, not only around the corner, but across the globe.

"The Optiportal node will enable Victorian ICT researchers to use high definition interactive visualisation display walls with video collaboration and high performance computing technologies.

"The Optiportal will be particularly important for researchers with rich data sets, such as those working on humane genome or synchrotron data, or working in the field of climate change, and ultra broadband will enable their research to be accelerated.

"The Victorian Government is creating a grid of advanced ICT infrastructure and applications to facilitate richer research collaboration, allowing faster and better access to information, tools and people than ever before.

"Today's launch builds on the Victorian Government’s eResearch activities providing new ICT infrastructure and applications to manage and share data to support our researchers."

The Brumby Government’s $120K Optiportal investment builds on a suite of Victorian eResearch initiatives including:

  • $8 million Victorian eResearch Strategic Initiative (VeRSI);
  • $28 million in ICT research funding to the National ICT Australia (NICTA) Victoria Research Laboratory;
  • $8 million for the Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing (VPAC); and
  • $21.5 million investment in the Victorian Education and Research Network (VERN) to establish a super broadband network linking around 200 research locations.
