Media release - 24 November 2008

Local software company Acryn today announced a lucrative partnership with global technology giant Intel in an eLearning deal worth more than $55 million to deliver Victorian programs into schools in the United States.

Acting Information and Communication Technology Minister Gavin Jennings joined Acryn today to mark the multi-million dollar deal and said the announcement was yet another example of Victoria leading the way in the sector.

Mr Jennings said software development company Acryn had designed an eLearning application called Knowledge Community that that linked schools, teachers, students and parents online that had received plenty of interest in global markets.

"Intel's decision to work with Acryn to deliver their eLearning program in the US is testament to our reputation as Australia's leading state in ICT," Mr Jennings said.

"This investment is also a clear demonstration of the company's long-term commitment to Victoria and we are proud to count an ICT company of this calibre as part of our local industry.

"The US state of Oregon is already rolling out Acryn's flagship Knowledge Community to its 1200 schools state-wide."

Mr Jennings said the application would be fast-tracked to 50 schools initially and then rolled out across Oregon. Knowledge Community was developed in 2002 and originally implemented in several Victorian schools.

"The Knowledge Community system will include collaborative tools for teaching and learning through to education management, data aggregation and state-wide cooperation in a single, secure and unified interface that can be accessed by the whole schools community," he said.

"Acryn has also signed a further contract with Intel to roll out to schools across Alabama."

Mr Jennings said the Victorian ICT continued to go from strength to strength, combining the skills, infrastructure and innovation required to attract international companies such as Intel.

"Victoria has forged a reputation as Australia's ICT centre and the Brumby Government is committed to remaining at the forefront of new technologies," he said.

"This is a significant export deal for the local industry and further demonstrates our natural advantages in eLearning. It underlines our ability to compete in overseas export markets because of the quality of our solutions."

Victoria's ICT industry generates $24.4 billion in annual revenue, exports over $1.8 billion and employs more than 84,000 people, accounting for about 34 per cent of national ICT employment.
