Victorian Games Industry Takes Qantm Leap For Students

Media release - 18 August 2007

Victoria’s first electronic games related degree offered by a private college has been officially launched by the Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Theo Theophanous said today in Melbourne.

Speaking at the launch of the new Melbourne Campus of Qantm College, Mr Theophanous said Australia’s $21 billion digital media industry is set to flourish with the new pool of graduates emerging from Qantm.

“Qantm College offered Australia’s first pure ‘Games’ degree at its Brisbane campuses and I’m delighted that Victorian students will now also have the benefit of the specialised Qantm curriculum,” Mr Theophanous said.

“Qantm College’s unique program, offering an emphasis on aligning knowledge and skills with the current industry demand, will be a huge asset to Victoria’s digital media industry.

“Graduates from Qantm College have always been highly regarded by the games and animation industries, with a consistent uptake of graduates into animation houses and game development studios each year.

“From the 2006 graduation class, 100 per cent of programming graduates were employed by the games industry within three months of completing their course and 70 per cent of animation and design graduates were employed within four months.

“This shows the Bachelor of Interactive Entertainment with majors in Animation, Games Programming and Games Design is a great pathway into the games industry, reinforcing the important role this Victorian campus can play.”

The two year full time program covers topics such as games system design, 2D and 3D animation and storyboarding.

The games industry is worth an estimated $A40 billion globally and Australian games companies export about $110 million of software and expertise each year, a number that is expected to rise to $500 million by 2010.

“This economic benefit reinforces the need for Victoria to be producing more highly skilled games graduates. I am pleased that Qantm College will be contributing to this lucrative specialist field,” Mr Theophanous said.

“At the last election this government reaffirmed a commitment to supporting students by giving them access to current technologies and information, and this is further evidence the Brumby Government is delivering on that commitment.”

Qantm College CEO, Jochen Mueller, said the College’s graduates’ learning outcomes were closely aligned with industry employment requirements to ensure students knowledge and skills were relevant.
