Victorian ICT Delegation to Scale Chinese Wall

Victorian ICT Delegation to Scale Chinese Wall

Media release - 30 August 2006

The Bracks Government will support 30 Victorian ICT (Information and Communication Technology) companies to visit China in one of the most potentially lucrative trade missions to be held in recent years, Minister for Information and Communication Technology Marsha Thomson said today.

The delegation – comprising 30 organisations and around 36 individuals from the Victoria.NET, Games, RFID, eSecurity, eLearning, Victorian Photonics Network, Software and Intelligent Transport Systems clusters - will visit Shanghai for the CeBIT Asia ICT Trade Fair in September.

"China is one of the largest and most important emerging ICT markets and this trade fair will give our local ICT companies fantastic opportunities to forge partnerships, open up new supply chains, gain new clients and network for future synergies and export opportunities," Minister Thomson said.

"As with the other missions the Victorian Government has led in the past 12 months to the UK, US, India, Japan and Israel, this trade mission provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase Victoria as a lucrative investment location, producing innovative ICT products and services."

The Bracks Government's ICT Trade Events and Export Assistance Program is making it possible for home-grown ICT companies to showcase their products and services at some of the most prestigious and important ICT conventions across the world by providing financial assistance for export-ready companies to attend recognised overseas trade fairs.

Since 2002 the Victorian Government has generated approximately $900 million in exports for the State's ICT sector, with the mission to Japan earlier this year creating almost $5 million worth of projected export opportunities.

Strong links already exist between China and Victoria. A sister State to Jiangsu Province for the past 25 years, Victoria is home to major Chinese ICT companies including ZTE Corporation, TCL and Changhong Electric.

The focus by the Bracks Government on China as an emerging market for the Victorian ICT industry comes as a result of Minister Thomson's trade mission to China in 2005, which also led to the development of an emerging ICT market strategy for China which will be released in the coming weeks.
