| Victorian innovation, excellence and technical expertise were highlighted last night at the fifth annual Victorian Spatial Excellence Awards. Representing Information and Communication Technology Minister John Lenders, Cabinet Secretary and Member for Prahran Tony Lupton MP said the annual Victorian Spatial Excellence Awards ceremony was a fantastic addition to the state’s information and communication technology (ICT) calendar. “The Spatial Awards do a great job of showcasing this increasingly high profile and growth industry – and in recognising the achievements and contributions of Victorian talent,” Mr Lupton said. The spatial industry, which encompasses mapping, surveying, remote sensing and photogrammetry, has undergone a major modern transformation through the application of ICT and other related technologies. “Latest reports show the 223 spatial information businesses operating in Victoria are generating $452 million each year for the state’s economy – and $189 million of this is income sourced from outside Victoria,” he said. “The Victorian Government has long recognised the potential of this growth sector and for the past five years has been a key sponsor of the event.” In addition to sponsoring the Victorian Spatial Excellence Awards, the Victorian Government has: • provided $100,000 in February 2007 to establish the Spatial Victoria industry cluster; • contributed a total of $6.3 million to the Broadband Innovation Fund (BIF) Spatial Imaging Project, to enhance Victoria's ability to manage environmental issues such as water quality. The Victorian Spatial Excellence Awards are organised by the Victorian regional groups of the Australian Spatial Information Business Association and the Spatial Sciences Institute.
