VIC6 promoting the benefits of IPv6 |
| VIC6 is an Industry Outreach program, supported by the Victorian Government, to promote the benefits of IPv6, ensuring that Victoria maintains its leading edge in the technology field. Overcoming the limitations of the current IPv4 internet addressing system, IPv6 will provide an effectively unlimited number of IP addresses that can be used across a range of applications and allow for faster, more secure communication between networks. The Victorian Government is the first state government in Australia to recognise and actively promote the benefits of shifting to IPv6, and has committed $350,000 towards a $1.2 million Industry Outreach program, including the development of a virtual testbed with the AiGroup and IPv6Now. IPv4 provides a limited number of unique identifiers for each device attached to a network. Address capacity constraints and the short term solutions to this problem are creating further delays and inefficiencies. IPv6 will overcome these inefficiencies. For instance, instead of having to use twenty gateways to communicate internationally, with IPv6, business only has to use two - this makes it easier to authenticate and authorise communications, improving security, transparency speeds and efficiency. IPv6 is a technology enabler, it allows for innovation in areas such as monitoring, metering, security, safety and health because each connection, sensor or device can be identified, monitored and remotely controlled. This has huge implications for Victoria’s economy, particularly in the automotive, health and finance sectors. The Victorian Government's IPv6 initiative will be delivered as part of its new $244.7m Building Our Industries for Our Future package which features action plans to boost manufacturing, service industries and exports.
