What is the VicFibreLINKSproject? |
| $20 million in Government funding to build competitive long-haul infrastructure in regional Victoria. |
| VicFibreLINKS will provide funding to support the development of new open access fibre in strategic regional locations across the state. The Government will seek private investment in the project via a Request for Proposals which is scheduled to be released to the market in April 2009. |
What will the VicFibreLINKSproject achieve? |
| The Government's objective is to promote economic development in regional Victoria. |
| VicFibreLINKS will develop competitive, open access fibre from Bendigo to Mildura via Echuca and Swan Hill, and Geelong to Warrnambool. The new infrastructure will not only meet the bandwidth needs of high capacity users in these markets, but stimulate the competitive supply of broadband services to consumers. |
What benefits will theVicFibreLINKSproject deliver? |
| VicFibreLINKS will enable Victorian government and industry greater access to next generation broadband infrastructure. Next generation broadband will allow government and industry to take advantage of new collaborative Web 2.0 tools and change the way they operate and deliver services. For the Victorian community, VicFibreLINKS will promote greater competitive supply of broadband services and the provision of innovative new products. |
What is the timeframe for theVicFibreLINKSproject? |
| The Government expects to issue a Request for Proposals in April 2009. |
How will theVicFibreLINKSproject fit in with other State and Commonwealth Government broadband initiatives? |
| VicFibreLINKS is a broadband infrastructure project that will fund the deployment of new competitive long-haul fibre. |
| The new VicFibreLINKS infrastructure may be leveraged to support the innovative applications/services projects that are developed through the collaborative Internet Innovation Fund or MAV Broadband Innovation Program. |
| Broadband Project Officers will be able to assist in identifying how the VicFibreLINKS may be strategically incorporated in those two programs. |
