Virtual Worlds

Virtual Worlds

Melbourne Laneways will be removed from Second Life on 28 August 2008. This follows a successful pilot project and a consequent evaluation that determined no ongoing need for the presence at this time.

Multimedia Victoria has concluded a two-phased project into virtual worlds. The project aimed to explore who and why people are visiting virtual worlds, how virtual worlds operate in practise, and what options Victorian Government has for ongoing involvement in virtual worlds.

The first phase of the project delivered a research publication titled

Would Your Business Benefit from a Second Life? (PDF 1.1MB, 15 pages)

The second phase delivered the 'Melbourne Laneways' prototype in Second Life, and an evaluation of the experience in Second Life (summarised below).

Melbourne Laneways co-exists on the
ABC Island* in Second Life, and captures the quintessential characteristics of Melbourne, such as hidden cafes, and Federation Square. The avatar, "Melbourne Laneways Latte", personifies the laneways.

Who and Why People Visited
Anecdotal evidence suggests that people are interested in the Melbourne Laneways concept. The visual design attracted visitors, along with a number of thematic and competitive events such as the Melbourne Cup scavenger hunt. The audience responded positively to the information being provided to them, and indicated they would even visit Melbourne based on their experience in Melbourne Laneways.

Managing Melbourne Laneways
In practise, managing a virtual presence requires steadfast dedication to foster collaboration and interaction. The following requirements were identified;
  • immersive events that engage residents
  • virtual content that directly relates to business objectives
  • a strong community group to support the presence

Who and Why People Visited
Melbourne Laneways has attracted positive feedback, and the Victorian Government is keen to remain active in researching innovative uses of immersive technology, and user-generated content.
