Victorian Education Research Network

Victorian Education Research Network - VERN

VERN is a multi-million dollar statewide fibre optic network. The network will span more than 2,000 kilometres and link up to 200 research sites throughout Victoria.

VERN will revolutionise the way the Victorian academic and research community communicates and collaborates with the world. VERN will be a fundamental building block of Victoria's research grid and is an essential peice of infrastructure for e-research in the State.

VERN will cover most of metroplitan Melbourne and key areas in regional Victoria. The project will initially go to
  • East Gippsland
  • Latrobe Valley
  • Ballarat
  • Bendigo
  • Shepparton
  • Geelong
  • Wodonga
  • Werribee
Other towns will be linked in later stages.

Deployment of the network began in 2005 and is due for completion in 2008.

The Victorian Government is providing access to its $21.5 million Regional Fast Rail fibre optic network. Victoria's nine universities are contributing $17.1 million and the Commonwealth Government $14.7 million.

The use of Regional Fast Rail cabling for the rollout of VERN is a example of the Government's Broadband Framework commitment to utilising public infrastructure assets to support strategic broadband projects.
