Collaborative Internet Innovation Fund information session - Presentation Transcript Part 1

cIIF Information Sessions

Presentation Transcript - Part 1
Welcome to today's information session on the collaborative Internet innovation fund. This is a new Victorian government grants programme. Appreciate everyone coming along on such a hot day. My name is Jane Gardam[sic], I'm the CF programme manager at the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development.

The context for the programme is the move into a new era of ICT or information and communication technology. This new era is popularly known as web 2. 0, we refer to it as the collaborative Internet, it's often called the participative web or the read-write Internet or web.

This new era is characterised by the advent of the network as a platform. So what we're seeing is globally there's widespread deployment of high capacity broadband. There is take-up of an on the network connecting up globally, and mass scale of users and multiple digital devices and we're also seeing the use of the Internet as the key platform for people to collaborate and communicate.

When we talk about next generation ICT, we're talking about a range of new Internet-based tools, many of which will be familiar to you, things like wikis, blogs, image and video sharing sites, social networking sites, virtual worlds, image-based or mapping- based interfaces. It also refers to a range of new Internet-based capabilities. Things like user-generated content, so people producing as well as consuming the Internet; collective intelligence, or the ability to source from the crowd ideas, solutions, information; reusable information - so information in forms that's easy to trade and exchange, to join together with other information; open collaborative interfaces and also light weight applications that are based on the Internet.

Another feature is rich data, so beyond text - people producing and using and consuming video, audio and image-based information. So this new era of web technologies presents great opportunities for innovation, the ability to harness the power of networks, collective capabilities and large scale information, however like all shifts in technologies there will be a process of adapting and learning about how to best use these new tools and capabilities, particularly in organisational contexts, while we're already seeing individuals and some individual companies or organisations using these tools, often organisations don't have the capital or the information or the policy settings that enable them to innovate or take a step change using these technologies.

That is what this programme is about. It's about supporting leader organisations who want to take a step change and undertake a project, using next generation ICT to find out the best ways to use it and to demonstrate to others what's required.

Just to give you a bit of a sense of the sorts of projects we're targeting under the programme. It's really focused on people and organisations using technology as opposed to the generational R&D of a new technology, or commercialisation of a new technology. So we're looking at projects that are using the capabilities of next generation ICT to implement a process or practice change. We're looking for projects that are collaborative, so have multiple partners working together and we're looking for projects that support the priorities or challenges for your organisation, so are important to your organisations.

We're also interested in projects that have a strong driver for the organisations to work together and good leadership in terms of being able to implement the project and also to champion change.
