eResearch

eResearch is revolutionising every aspect of scientific practice. The Government recognises the enormous importance of innovative research to both the economic and social well being of the State and released an eResearch framework in October 2006.

Through this framework
"eResearch:an eRevolution" , the Government is supporting a range of eResearch projects.

Victorian Life Sciences Computation Initiative (VLSCI)
The VLSCI will be the first facility of its kind in Australia and is intended to be the world’s most powerful supercomputer and leading computational biology facility dedicated to life sciences research.

The VLSCI includes $50 million in State funding for the supercomputer infrastructure, and is a joint initiative with the University of Melbourne (UoM). The UoM will raise another $50 million towards the VLSCI.

Victorian eResearch Strategic Initiative (VeRSI)
The VeRSI program will consist of five complementary eResearch projects. These projects include
  • support and training
  • security and access
  • storage systems
  • virtual beam line
  • life sciences use-cases and applications

More information is available on the Versi website.

Cancer Grid
The Victorian Government has committed $11 million for the development of the Australian Cancer Grid (ACG), a cutting-edge grid application.

Victoria will have a resource of patient and scientific data that will link Victoria’s cancer researchers, health professionals, cancer institutes and health services into one of the world’s largest cancer control networks.

Victorian Partnership for Advanced Computing (VPAC)
VPAC is a a state pf the art high performance computing facility. The Government has invested up to $8 million million to VPAC over the past five years. VPAC's activities includes

  • large-scale computational models and simulations for scientific and engineering research
  • development and support of custom databases for life sciences research
  • development of specialized web portals to host/access research data
  • visualization software and hardware for scientific research

More information is available on the VPAC website.

National ICT Australia Victorian Research Laboratory (NICTA)
The Government has provided significant funding to NICTA. NICTA undertakes commercially-focused ICT research in areas including
  • neuro-engineering
  • biosignal processing
  • biosensor networks
  • computational analysis of complex biological systems

More information is available on the NICTA website.

Victorian Education Research Network
VERN is a multi-million dollar statewide fibre optic network. The network will span more than 2,000 kilometres and link up to 200 research sites throughout Victoria.

The Victorian Government is providing access to its $21.5 million Regional Fast Rail fibre optic network. Victoria's nine universities are contributing $17.1 million and the Commonwealth Government $14.7 million.

More information is available on the VERN website.
